Bulgaria Left, Right Opposition: Car Arsons Test Security, Govt 19.12.2011 00:00

Key politicians from both Bulgaria's leftist and rightist opposition have expressed worries about the wave of mysterious and yet unpunished car arsons gripping capital Sofia since end of November. "We have here an express attempt at destabilization of the country and sowing fear among citizens. This cannot be an improvized joke campaign, as the arsons are obviously professionally orchestrated," stated former Minister of Interior and Bulgarian Socialist Party MP Rumen Petkov. "The problem with those car arsons is starting to turn in a problem about Bulgarian statehood itself and the capacity of the government to protect it citizens," commented former PM and present leader of rightist Democrats for Strong Bulgaria Ivan Kostov. Once more, key representatives of Bulgaria's socialists and their arch-enemy rightists have independently voiced similar criticisms of Bulgaria's center-right government led by PM Boyko Borisov. "I cannot exclude a scenario in which the car torchings are the way organized crime groups are attempting to send signals to the Borisov cabinet," commented socialist Petkov. Kostov on his part slammed PM Borisov for reporting the number of people detained in relation to the arsons, albeit no solid evidence and explanation of the cases have been produced yet. Since the start of the car arsons end of November, some 50 vehicles, owned as it appears by random individuals, have been set aflame in the area of Bulgarian capital Sofia.
